Teachers see what's happening with kids. We know when something is wrong.

Recently, we shared a BBC NewsBite that I haven't been able to shake. A survey of more than 50,000 primary school students in Wales found that one in seven children aged 7 to 11 had emotional difficulties serious enough that they might need professional support. A third said they regularly felt worried, sad, or upset. Seven years old.

That's one study, from one part of the UK. But US data tells a similar story, and it gets heavier as kids move into their preteen and teen years. Nearly one in five US children aged 3 to 17 has been diagnosed with a mental, emotional, or behavioral health condition. In 2025, a third of US high school students reported persistent sadness or hopelessness. And one in five adolescents aged 12 to 17 say they have mental health needs that aren't being met.

Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that one in seven young people aged 10 to 19 lives with a mental health condition, and that most of those conditions go unrecognized and untreated.

Unrecognized by whom, though? Teachers spend hours with students every day. You notice when a talkative kid goes quiet, when homework stops coming in, when a student starts eating lunch alone. Often you see what's happening before parents do, and long before a doctor does. That makes teachers one of the most important early warning systems a young person has.

Here's what that can look like in a classroom, drawn from Jack.org's guidance on warning signs:

A student drops clubs, sports, or activities they used to love
Grades slip, or work that always came in on time stops arriving
They pull away from friends or start avoiding group work
They seem exhausted, or mention they aren't eating or sleeping well
Irritability, anger, or outbursts that feel out of character
Comments like "What's the point?" or "Nothing matters"

Everyone has off days. Jack.org's rule of thumb is to pay attention when a change is intense, lasts about two weeks or more, and gets in the way of school, friendships, or daily routines. If a student just isn't themselves lately, it's worth checking in.

And teachers do that while carrying a lot themselves. In RAND's 2026 survey of US teachers, 55% reported frequent job-related stress, compared with 34% of similar working adults. Seeing what's happening is only half of it. Knowing what to say next, and where to turn, is the part most of us were never taught.

Why we're proud to support the Be There Certificate

That gap is exactly what the Be There Certificate is built to close, and it's why we at BBC Learning Hub are proud to support it this World Mental Health Day.

The Be There Certificate was created by Jack.org, a Canadian charity that trains young people to lead on mental health, in partnership with Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, with the mission to empower and inspire young people to build a kinder, braver world that supports their mental health. Be There is a free, self-paced online course, available in English, French, and Spanish. It teaches how to recognize when someone might be struggling, how to support them safely, and how to look after your own mental health while you do it.

What I appreciate most is what it doesn't ask of you. It doesn't ask teachers to become counselors or teens to become therapists for their friends. It asks you to be a steady, caring person who knows how to open a conversation and where to point someone next. That's a role every teacher and every student can play.

The basics: Be There's 5 Golden Rules

The course is built around Be There's 5 Golden Rules, a simple framework for supporting someone who's struggling. Every situation is different, but these hold up in a classroom, a hallway, or a group chat.

Say what you see. Start with something specific you've noticed, not a label or a diagnosis. "You've seemed quieter in class this week. How are you doing?" opens a door without pushing anyone through it.
Show you care. Trust comes before anything else. Make it clear you're asking because you care about them, not because you're worried about their grades or behavior.
Hear them out. Listen more than you talk. Resist the urge to fix things straight away; often the most helpful thing is letting someone feel heard.
Know your role. You're one part of someone's support, not all of it. Setting boundaries protects the relationship and your own wellbeing.
Connect to help. Help them reach the right people, whether that's your school counselor, a parent, another trusted adult, or a local helpline.

There's also a sixth idea running through all of it: be there for yourself. For teachers carrying the stress those RAND numbers describe, that one matters as much as the other five.

One important line: if someone's safety is at risk, this isn't a conversation to manage alone. Contact emergency services or a crisis helpline right away, and follow your school's safeguarding procedures.

Take 90 minutes this World Mental Health Day

The course takes about 90 minutes, costs nothing, and you can work through it at your own pace. Teachers can take it as professional learning. Teens can take it too, because the friend who notices is often the first line of support. Share it with your students, your colleagues, and your own family.

World Mental Health Day is October 10. I'm taking the course this week, and I hope you'll join me.
