In 1821, trader William Becknell led a party from Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico, opening a route that became known as the Santa Fe Trail. Connecting the United States and newly independent Mexico, the trail developed into a major commercial highway, carrying goods across more than 900 miles and helping transform regional economies. Trade grew dramatically, connecting communities in the Southwest with markets as far away as New York, London, and Paris.
The Santa Fe Trail also played a strategic role during the Civil War, when Confederate forces attempted to gain control of New Mexico and its resources. Union troops defeated Confederate forces at the Battle of Glorieta Pass in 1862, protecting an important supply route through the Southwest. By 1880, expanding railroads had largely replaced the trail, but its legacy remained in the economic, cultural, and territorial development of the American West.
In the 1820s, Texas was part of Mexico, which invited settlers from the United States to move to the region. Disagreements over Mexican laws, cultural differences, and political control contributed to growing tensions. In 1835, the Texas Revolution began, as Texan rebels fought Mexican forces led by President and General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The Battle of the Alamo became a defining moment in the conflict, as a small group of Texan defenders held out for 13 days before Mexican troops captured the mission-fortress on March 6, 1836.
Weeks later, Mexican forces executed hundreds of Texan prisoners at Goliad. On April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston led a surprise attack against Santa Anna’s army at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texan forces defeated the Mexican army and captured Santa Anna, helping secure Texas independence. Houston later became the first president of the Republic of Texas. The revolution shaped the region’s future, though the conflict also reflected competing claims to land, political authority, and national identity that had lasting consequences for both Texans and Mexico.
As much fun as the beach can be, it can also be dangerous. Ocean conditions can change rapidly, turning waves from calm to catastrophic in a matter of moments. It’s one of the reasons why lifeguards are so important, and a witness recently caught video footage of a lifeguard — ahem, hero — in action at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, where the waves seemed normal at first, then seemingly suddenly turned rough enough to challenge even strong swimmers.
A 10-year-old boy was swept about 15 yards offshore before 16-year-old rookie lifeguard Ryder Williams reached him. Several beachgoers also joined the effort, and the entire rescue lasted just over two minutes. That might not seem like a long time when you’re scrolling on your phone or hitting the snooze button in the morning, but think about fighting against the ocean to save a life for 120 seconds. That’s a lot of pressure!
Williams has since been invited to the White House to receive a high civilian honor for his actions, but the rescue is also important for awareness in general, because it shows why lifeguards matter even when things seem calm.
