Q: Why is Fatima unable to leave the camp?
A: As a refugee, she has no passport or ID card. She is a citizen of Somalia but she can not go back to Somalia. Police patrol the area surrounding the refugee camp and demand to see documentation if people try to enter neighboring Nairobi.

Q: Why do you think the neighboring countries are reluctant to accept refugees?
A: In countries that already face difficulties of their own (such as poverty and limited resources), an influx of refugees would put further strain on the economy, schools, housing, and healthcare.

Q: Explain what Fatima means by living in an “open prison."
A: She may not have the freedom to travel to another country, but she understands that the refugee camp is safer than living in Somalia. She can move about the camp freely and interact with other refugees and families. She has her basic needs (food, water, and shelter), but she is trapped in these meager conditions.
