Losing Land Space: Lemurs in Madagascar
Lesson Express
Q: What is unique (and shocking!) about the Berenty Reserve?
A: It is one of the island’s most famous nature reserves and home to two species of lemurs, but it is very small in area.
Q: What is so ironic about the fields of sisal plants?
A: Sisal plants are often used to produce environmentally friendly packaging products, but to grow the plants, many of the natural forests have to be cut down, shrinking the natural habitat of local wildlife.
Q: Do you agree with Simon’s choice to include the elements of human life when filming the lemurs? Why or why not?
A: Student responses will vary. Some students may agree because it shows the viewer an authentic glimpse of the lemurs’ habitat that must compete with humans. Others may disagree because showing the pristine wild and undisturbed habitat may evoke a better appreciation and fascination for the animals.
