The Go Jetters and the Shipwreck Reef

In The Go Jetters and the Shipwreck Reef, the Go Jetters crew discovers the rusty submarine wreck isn’t leaking oil — it’s become a reef itself! Ubercorn shares funky facts about natural and artificial reefs, and how objects, like shipwrecks, can help the reef by becoming underwater habitats. This video is excerpted from BBC’s Go Jetters, a series that follows the adventures of four international heroes as they travel the globe visiting landmarks and solving environmental problems with Ubercorn, a disco-dancing unicorn.

Q: What is an artificial reef?
A: An artificial reef is something that is not coral that eventually grows coral on it and becomes a home for ocean animals.

Q: Why didn’t the Go Jetters take the submarine out of the water?
A: The submarine had become an artificial reef so it was helping the animals on the reef. It was not leaking oil so it was not a danger to the environment.

Q: What other objects could become artificial reefs? What objects could not?
A: Student responses will vary. Students may mention statues or concrete that can become artificial reefs. They may talk about plastic bags or plastic pollution that cannot.
