Lesson Express
Q: Why is the Wichi’s situation so dire?
A: The Wichi depend on the forest as a way of life. The bulldozers and machinery are powerful and destructive. The Wichi can do little to stop illegal logging.
Q: Why is illegal logging a global problem?
A: Clearing the forests can be profitable for the sale of lumber, but also because farmers want the land to grow their crops. This occurs in countries of all sizes and all locations all over the world.
Q: What does Simon mean when he says that much of Britain’s landscape is artificial?
A: Much of Britain was once forests, but 90% of Britain’s land was cleared out for agricultural purposes. The natural forests are gone; the rolling fields are not the original landscape.
