Spiders are often feared for their creepy looks and quick moves. But did you know that most spiders aren’t dangerous to humans? Only a few have venom that can cause real harm. Here are the top 10 most venomous spiders in the world.
10. Mouse Spider
Named for its underground burrows, not for eating mice, the mouse spider looks scary but isn’t very aggressive. Its bite might cause a headache or numbness.
9. Wolf Spider (Lycosa Tarantula)
This large spider from southern Europe is nocturnal and rarely bites humans. Its venom isn’t very harmful.
8. Brown Widow
With striped legs and bright markings, the brown widow is less toxic than the black widow but can still cause pain and vomiting.
7. White-Tailed Spider
Native to Australia, this spider prefers to hunt other spiders. It hides in shoes or clothes and its bite may lead to nausea and headaches.
6. Southern Black Widow
Recognized by its red hourglass, this spider has a painful bite. It’s more dangerous for the elderly and young children, but deaths are rare.
5. Redback Spider
Also from Australia, the redback uses venom to paralyze prey and liquefy their insides. Its bite is painful and can cause nausea and sweating.
4. Brown Recluse
This shy North American spider bites only when touched. Its venom may lead to vomiting, fever, or in rare cases, destruction of red blood cells.
3. Chilean Recluse
More toxic than its brown cousin, this spider’s bite can damage skin and cause kidney problems. In rare cases, it can be deadly.
2. Brazilian Wandering Spider
Also known as the “banana spider,” it hides in plants and homes. Its venom can cause serious symptoms like breathing problems, and in rare cases, death.
1. Australian Funnel-Web Spider
Topping the list, this spider is extremely venomous and aggressive. It can bite multiple times and its venom acts quickly. Without treatment, its bite can be fatal.
