Vocabulary

Molecule (noun): A very small piece of matter made up of atoms.

Substance (noun): A kind of material that something is made of.

Water is an amazing substance that is needed for life. It makes up more than 70% of our planet and is found everywhere!

A one-of-a-kind molecule

Water is special because it can be a liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam) all in one place.

Sticky molecules that help life

Water is important because it helps move things inside our bodies, like food and oxygen, and helps plants grow. Water also has a special ability to dissolve other substances, which makes it perfect for carrying chemicals inside our cells.

The water cycle keeps it moving

The water cycle helps all living things on Earth. Water from oceans and plants goes up into the air, then comes back down as rain or snow. The Sun gives energy to keep this cycle going. Learning about the water cycle helps us take care of our water.

Water in space?

Scientists are excited to find water on other planets and moons, like Europa, a moon of Jupiter. Even though water is found in space, Earth has just the right kind to support life. Learning about water helps us use it wisely and take care of it.
