How Science and Technology Help Prevent and Predict Wildfires

A new way to study fires
With rising global temperatures and drier conditions, wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent and severe. To better understand and manage them, a team of scientists recently conducted a large-scale fire experiment in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest. The controlled burn was part of a forest management project designed to clear overmature spruce trees and promote the growth of young aspen trees, which provide essential habitat for elk.
High-tech fire tools
The researchers utilized state-of-the-art technology to monitor every aspect of the fire. Helicopters equipped with heli-torches ignited the blaze, while ground crews used handheld torches to spread the flames. Drones, fitted with infrared cameras, tracked the fire’s heat intensity and smoke movement. Laser scanners measured the fire’s size and shape, and weather instruments collected wind speed, humidity, and air quality data.
Predicting fire and smoke
Scientists ran computer models to predict the fire’s behavior, factoring in how the fire could alter local weather patterns by generating its own winds and precipitation. In the future, more accurate models could allow firefighters to predict how quickly fires will spread and where smoke plumes will travel. This information could help authorities issue earlier warnings, giving people more time to evacuate or take precautions.

Despite funding challenges, researchers remain dedicated to improving fire science. Their work could transform wildfire management and protect lives and ecosystems from future infernos.
