What do golden eagles look like?
The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is a powerful bird of prey found in the northern hemisphere, including parts of the UK. It is easily recognized by its dark brown body and golden feathers on the back of its head and neck. Juvenile golden eagles have distinctive white patches on their wings and tail, which fade as they mature.
Where do they live?
In the UK, golden eagles primarily inhabit the remote mountains and glens of Scotland. They prefer open landscapes where they can soar and hunt effectively. These birds build large nests, called eyries, on cliffs or in tall trees, often returning to the same nest for many years.
What do golden eagles eat?
Golden eagles have a varied diet, mainly consisting of small to medium-sized mammals like rabbits and hares, as well as birds such as grouse and ptarmigans. They are skilled hunters, using their keen eyesight and powerful talons to catch prey. Occasionally, they scavenge on carrion, especially during winter months when live prey is scarce.
How are people helping them?
Historically, golden eagles faced significant threats from human persecution, leading to their decline in many areas of the UK. Conservation efforts, including legal protection and reintroduction programs, have been implemented to help restore their populations, particularly in Scotland and parts of Ireland.
