Costa Rica is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, with its lush rainforests, cloud forests, and coastal ecosystems hosting a variety of species, many of which are rare or endangered.

Howler monkeys:

One of the most iconic sounds in Costa Rica is that of the howler monkey. These monkeys, with their loud, raspy calls, can be heard echoing through the rainforest, often at dawn or dusk. Their calls are so powerful they can travel up to a mile in dense forests.

Quetzals:

The resplendent quetzal, a symbol of freedom in many Central American cultures, is another stunning creature found in the cloud forests of Costa Rica. The vibrant green and red feathers of this bird are a true sight to behold, and spotting one in the wild is a rare treat.

Jaguars:

These largest wild cats in the Americas are elusive but can sometimes be seen in coastal regions. They tend to leave tracks in the sand, and their presence is often known by the distinctive markings they leave behind.

Poison dart frogs:

Among the most fascinating creatures in Costa Rica are the various species of poison dart frogs. The strawberry poison dart frog, named for its bright colors, can be spotted in the forests, although they are not easy to find.

Sea turtles:

The country is also known for its sea turtles, with the olive ridley turtle being a frequent visitor to the beaches where it nests.

Sloths:

Sloths are one of Costa Rica’s most beloved creatures. These slow-moving mammals are often found hanging lazily from trees in national parks like the Manuel Antonio National Park.
